As part of the Gardening for Life Speaker Series, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents The Magic of Butterflies with Blake Dinius, Entomologist Extension Educator at the County of Plymouth, Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 1pm.
The Gardening for Life Speaker Series honors the Historic Shirley G. Cross Wildflower Garden at the Green Briar Nature Center.
Have you seen a satyr? A monarch? Or a wood nymph? Butterflies evoke fantastical imagery of small mythical creatures flitting about. Take a closer look and witness a drama unfolding before your eyes: graceful creatures hard at work avoiding predators and imbibing nectar. Their top imperative? Mate, lay eggs on the proper plant, and secure the next generation.
Butterflies have been on this planet for over 100 million years. Sadly, many face challenges in today’s shifting landscape. With just a few simple tips, you can provide a haven for butterflies in your own backyard. Blake will discuss butterfly ecology: their adaptations, their needs, and the obstacles they face. Come learn about ways you can modify your own landscape to provide safe havens for these magical creatures.
Blake Dinius graduated with a degree in Biology from the University of Massachusetts – Boston. Soon after, he began a 7-year career in insect research where he directed studies on bees, lacewings, springtails, earthworms, and other critters. As an extension educator, Blake is committed to delivering science-based education that you can rely on. Blake offers programs on anything entomology-related: from pollinator gardening, to tick bite prevention, to guided butterfly walks.
